Stalin’s dacha, Abkhazia.

Stalin’s bodyguards, Beria, and Voroshilov wait quietly. Everyone expects to see Stalin on the verandah, but he appears in the middle of the garden with Nestor Lakoba. They chat for a while and have breakfast. After that they go back to the garden.

Stalin: Well, that is enough of you lounging about. Get up, all of you. Do you see this wild shrubbery? It should be pulled out.

They do not even change clothes and start to work. The thorns are in everyone’s fingers. Stalin is smoking a pipe, and Lakoba stands near.

Stalin: Snakes.

Beria is holding a rake while examining his fingers, which are bleeding from thorns. He needs a better tool. Next to him, Voroshilov is assisting with an axe. Neither are successful in extracting the root because the root is slippery and hard to pull out. Beria exchanges his rake for Voroshilov’s axe, stares angrily at Nestor, and slams down on the root to excavate it. Finally he pulls that root out and speaks as loudly as possible so Stalin could hear.

Beria: I can pull out any root if the Comrade Stalin orders it.
